THE MANUFACTURE
The Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) belongs to the family of the myrtle family and thrives in New Zealand from the coasts to the heights of alpine regions.
The resistant, evergreen plant, which also bears the names "Red Manuka" or "New Zealand Tea Tree" (not to be confused with the Australian tea tree Melaleuca alternifolia), can take on very versatile forms: a 5-centimeter shrub, or a 15-meter high tree standing alone or appearing as whole scrub.
The narrow-elongated, almost needle-like leaves have an aromatic odor and a bitter, but not unpleasant, tart taste. The flowers are particularly beautiful in December (New Zealand summer) to advantage.
HISTORICAL
The plant was already known by Captain James COOK, who arrived in New Zealand in 1769 and whose crew prepared the leaves as a tea beverage.
The original use of the Manuka plants, however, began much earlier: The Maori (natives of New Zealand), who call the red Manuka Kahikatoa, treated burns, inflammation, insect bites and even wounds of their warriors with envelopes prepared from them.
In addition, the plant (as juice, infusion, inhalation, etc.) found and finds, inter alia, in indigestion, diarrhea, colic, fever, cold, urinary tract, pharyngitis, back pain and as a sedative application. Recent investigations by Prof. dr. Henle at the Chair of the Technical University in Dresden have shown that this special, active ingredient is methylglyoxal. Methylglyoxal is naturally produced in the nectar of the manuka flower and is collected by the bee. Also studies at the University of Waikoto (Prof. Dr. Molan) could prove that Manuka can counteract the infestation of Helicobacter pylori bacteria, the cause of gastric ulcers.
The name of the Active Manuka Honey will gradually be changed to the more accurate measurement method MGO. MGO is the amount of mg of methylglyoxal contained in one kilo of manuka honey.
No temperature is added to the honey when spinning. It is thrown at natural temperature.
